Hair Colouring

How to Mix L'oreal Hair Color

L'oreal hair color is both a professional and over-the-counter hair color product. The over-the-counter product is a tinting mix that comes with a set of instructions for mixing and application. A professional color product is sold in beauty supply stores, and should only be available to licensed cosmetologists and beauty salon owners.

Moderately Easy

Instructions

Things You'll Need

  • Coloring kit
  • Bottle or bowl
  • Plastic gloves
  • Applicator brush
    • 1

Purchase the necessary products based on the hair color results you would like to achieve. In order to mix over-the-counter L'oreal products, buy a kit that includes both the color and the developer. When mixing professional L'oreal hair color products, it is necessary to purchase the developer, hair color, bottle and gloves separately. L'oreal hair color product comes in both creme and liquid consistencies.

    • 2

Put on plastic gloves in order to protect your hands from the dye and developer. If using the coloring kit, puncture the top of the coloring tube that is included with the pointed part of the color tube cap. Squeeze the entire tube into the bottle that contains the developer. If using the professional L'oreal liquid hair color product, pour the entire bottle of color into the tint applicator bottle and add an equal amount of developer.

    • 3

Close the developer bottle, and gently turn the bottle up and down or shake lightly until the mixture has a consistent texture with no variants in color. Make sure you hold a finger over the tip to prevent color spillage.

    • 4

Mix L'oreal professional creme hair coloring by putting a hole in the coloring tube using the pointed tip, and then mix using a color bowl and brush. Squeeze the desired amount of color into a hair coloring bowl and add an equal amount of developer to the mix. Stir the resulting product with an tint/color applicator brush until mixture has a smooth and creamy consistency

    • 5

Take horizontal 1/4-inch sections starting at the nape of the neck (for both bottle or brush application) and apply color to roots until they are completely covered. Leave on for 25 to 30 minutes. Run through the ends from one to five minutes to refresh color. For whole-head application, apply to the ends first. Start at the nape of the neck and begin approximately an inch from the roots until whole head is complete, then go back through and do the roots, again starting at the nape. Leave on for 25 to 30 minutes for complete coverage.

How Often Can I Color My Hair

L'Oreal recommends waiting two weeks

  • Most permanently colored hair grows at a rate that will require touching up the roots at least once every six weeks. The L'Oreal website recommends waiting at least two weeks between hair color applications. The recommendation is to wash hair, wait at least 24 hours and then apply the hair color.

Permanent color lasts longer than semi-permanent

  • Permanent hair color does not wash out like semi-permanent color does. Semi-permanent color washes out in as little as 10 shampoos, while permanent hair color lasts until it grows out or is covered up with another hair color. Permanent hair color needs to be reapplied as the hair roots grow out, usually every four to six weeks.

Bottom Line

  • Although you can recolor your hair every two weeks with L'Oreal hair color it probably wouldn't be very practical to do so because of the time and expense involved. Unless you are opting to change your color entirely, touching up the roots every four to six weeks is much more economical than coloring your hair every two weeks.
